The Elf Owl

Tiny, tiny, tiny!

Micrathene whitneyi

Check out this tiny little bird! Also known as the cactus owl or Whitney's owl, this little predator grows to a whopping five inches in length. The picture above is about life-size. It'd fit easily in my hand. He lives in the desert Southwest, where he burrows into (of all things) the giant saguaro cactus.

As of this writing, I'm not aware of any conservation efforts, or even any threatened/endangered listings or delistings concerning the elf owl.
